Description
Umtamvuna Nature Reserve – A Hidden Gem on the Edge of KZN
Nestled at the southernmost tip of KwaZulu-Natal, Umtamvuna Nature Reserve is a true botanical treasure. Stretching across 3,247 hectares, this protected area hugs the banks of the Umtamvuna River and features dramatic rocky cliffs, lush riverine forest, and an explosion of wildflowers during spring.
Whether you're up for a short scenic walk or a full-day adventure, the reserve offers a variety of trails ranging from one to three hours – with endless opportunities to explore its diverse habitats. Birdwatchers will be thrilled to know that both the Cape vulture and African fish eagle breed here, along with many other bird species.
Keep your eyes open for bushbuck, grey and blue duiker, baboons, samango monkeys, reedbuck, and even the elusive serval as you explore.
While there are no camping, caravanning, or overnight facilities within the reserve, it’s the perfect day destination for nature lovers. A small entrance fee is charged at the gate, where a field ranger will assist with maps and helpful insights to guide your visit.
