Raising Awareness for Down Syndrome: Beauty in the Genes ( wear Jeans )
This month marks Down Syndrome Awareness Month, a time dedicated to celebrating individuals with Down syndrome and raising awareness about the condition. In honour of this, a mother from Margate, South Africa, Mfezeko YamaNxuba Mhatu, is taking part in a heartfelt initiative alongside her daughter, who has Down syndrome.
On October 20th, the nation will recognize National Down Syndrome Day, where communities are encouraged to wear blue jeans and display stickers or badges to show their support. Mfezeko and her daughter have been entrusted with the meaningful task of selling these stickers and badges on behalf of Down Syndrome South Africa, with all proceeds contributing to the association’s efforts to support individuals and families affected by Down syndrome.
The stickers are available for R20 each, while the badges are sold for R30. Mfezeko is dedicated to making sure that anyone wishing to contribute can easily receive these items, offering delivery to those in the surrounding area.
This initiative not only provides a way to visibly show support but also allows people to contribute directly to a cause that affects many families. By wearing a sticker or badge, individuals will join a nationwide movement to raise awareness, promote inclusion, and champion the message:
Empower Me,
Include Me,
Accept Me,
See Me, Not My Diagnosis.
For those looking to participate and show their solidarity on National Down Syndrome Day, Mfezeko encourages purchasing a sticker or badge and wearing blue jeans as a symbol of support.
Join in, make a difference, and stand united in this important cause.
