Unlike the more familiar Cape fur seals, Southern elephant seals are remarkably terrestrial, spending weeks on land between diving excursions. These gentle giants are known for their impressive size and their ability to dive to incredible depths. However, Rocky’s journey had taken a detour to the South Coast.
Thanks to the vigilance of the local community, Rocky was discovered and rescued. A dedicated group of volunteers worked tirelessly to ensure his safety and comfort, while Airtrack Extreme Security stepped in to provide additional support, posting a guard to protect Rocky from curious onlookers and create a secure environment for him.
On Sunday morning, SAAMBR carefully lifted Rocky and transported him to uShaka Marine World, where he is receiving expert care from Dr. Lampman. The Southern Coast community rallied behind Rocky, demonstrating their commitment to the conservation of marine life.
The successful rescue of Rocky the Southern elephant seal was a collaborative effort involving several dedicated organizations and individuals. The KZN Stranding Network, composed of SAAMBR, KZN Wildlife, Honorary Officers, veterinarians, Ushaka vets, NSRI, and volunteers like Carla Steenkamp and Scott Kvalsvig, played a crucial role in the operation.
The South Coast of South Africa is a place of breathtaking beauty, but it is the people who truly make it extraordinary. The bonds forged among local residents are a testament to the enduring spirit of human connection and the shared commitment to protecting our natural world.
The dedication and expertise of the KZN Stranding Network, along with the support of organizations like Airtrack Security, were essential in ensuring Rocky’s recovery and eventual return to his natural habitat.
